Abstract
India is one of the few countries in the world with a substantial atomic research base. One of the requirements in atomic research is the need for optical inspection of fuel rods and other parts within the high radiation hot cells. For such applications, the sample preparation system needs to be equipped with a low-Speed diamond wafering, high-speed high precision diamond cutter, hot cell mounting press, and automatic polisher all operated remotely within the hot cell. The operation of these machines in the very high radiation environment forces technological challenges. The need for radiation-tolerant parts and remote operation makes the design and building of these machines technically sophisticated.
